Industrial Heat Pump 101: State of the market, and policy solutions for the Southwest

NOTE: This will now be VIRTUAL format via Teams (link sent with registration) and open at no cost to all!

Topic #1:
Industrial heat pumps (IHPs) offer a largely untapped opportunity to decarbonize industrial process heating for the industrial sector, including in the Southwest, yet the technology remains at an early stage of market adoption. Drawing on interviews with manufacturers, facility managers, and utility program staff in the Southwest, this talk will cover the basics of how IHPs work, and the applications where IHP adoption can be cost-effective. We will look at case studies from facilities that have installed IHPs in the Southwest, and the technical and economic barriers limiting broader adoption. Lastly, we will cover the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project’s (SWEEP) policy recommendations for structuring incentive programs and pilot projects to help jumpstart the emerging IHP market, developed for state governments and utilities like Rocky Mountain Power and Xcel Energy.

Presenters: Carly Peltier - Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP)

Carly Peltier is the Industrial Program Associate at the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP), where she is advancing the policies, programs, and strategies needed to decarbonize the industrial sector across the Southwest. She is supporting wider adoption of energy-efficient strategies and technologies, beneficial electrification technologies, and other industrial greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies. Prior to joining SWEEP, Carly managed federal energy efficiency and climate initiatives at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), served as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the DOE, and conducted climate research at Dartmouth College, Columbia University, and as a Fulbright Scholar. Carly received her PhD from Columbia University.

Topic #2:
Alex Cimino-Hurt of the Upper West Onsite Energy Technical Assistance Partnership (TAP) will share how the U.S. Department of Energy's no-cost technical assistance helps industrial facilities and other large energy users evaluate and deploy onsite energy technologies — including industrial heat pumps, CHP, thermal storage, and other generation technologies. He'll cover the support available at every project phase, from technology screening and economic analysis through design, procurement, and measurement and verification, and show what a TAP analysis actually delivers: system sizing, capital and O&M cost impacts, available incentives, simple payback, peak demand reduction, and thermal output. Attendees will leave knowing how to request assistance for their own facility and who to contact in their region.

Presenters: Alex Cimino-Hurt - Upper West Onsite Energy Technical Assistance Partnership (TAP)

Alex Cimino-Hurt, PE, CEM, leads the DOE Onsite Energy Technical Assistance Partnership for the Upper-West Region at Cascade Energy, serving Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Alex works directly with industrial and manufacturing facilities across the region to identify and evaluate onsite energy technologies, including combined heat and power, battery storage, solar PV, and industrial heat pumps, through DOE-backed, no-cost technical assistance. With a background in industrial engineering and years of energy efficiency work spanning utility programs, engineering consulting, and applied research, Alex brings a practitioner's view to helping facilities move from technical feasibility to a real project.
