Come join us at the U of U North Chilled Water Plant to view and discuss the CWP Thermal Storage system. Thermal energy storage (TES) encompasses various technologies enabling the storage of excess thermal energy for later use, ranging from individual processes to campus-scale applications. The University of Utah's North Chilled Water plant utilizes TES to leverage Rocky Mountain Power's Time of Day (TOD) rate differential. We'll explore the technology, system setup, benefits, challenges, economics, and evaluate whether initial assumptions held true over a decade.

Presenter: Sean Nielson

Sean is currently the Engineering Manager of Sustainability & Energy, a group within Facilities Management at the University of Utah. The UofU has a goal to be carbon neutral by 2040. His primary roles are to provide technical support related to utility sourcing and energy efficiency of building & central plant operations, taking into consideration economical & environmental impacts. He is passionate about improving the lives of others in current and future generations through sustainable practices. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University (Go Wildcats!) and over 10 years of experience working in a variety of technical roles. Sean is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and LEED accredited professional (LEED AP BD+C).

Presenter: Robert Hooper

Bob is the Account Executive/Business Development Manager for the state of Utah for Bernhard. Bob brings a wealth of industry experience including more than 33 years in business development including large renewable generation projects for commercial and industrial scale projects, DDC Controls, campus wide lighting retrofits and mechanical systems. One of the major accomplishments was increased safety resulting in over 700-days without a time loss accident. Bob’s experience also highlights strong leadership including serving as Vice President for a large mechanical contractor where he oversaw a 40-person, $10 MM per year Service department. Bob has been very involved in promoting energy efficiency and sustainability. He has and has been an active member of AEE for more than 15-years including serving as President of the Association of Energy Engineers for 2-years and has also served 15 years on the Board of Directors for Utah Society for Healthcare Engineering.
