Adding energy storage to buildings not only saves energy, energy costs, water and carbon, but it now gets a boost with substantial federal tax incentives.  This presentation will start with a recap of recently enacted federal incentives applicable to a myriad of clean energy projects, focusing mainly on the investment tax credit – which was expanded to include thermal energy storage.  Next, we’ll cover some of the challenges and opportunities in the transition to electrified heating systems.  Several system choices will be reviewed from a high-level overview.  Then, we’ll dive a little deeper into a novel approach to using thermal storage for both cooling and heating a commercial building – including an example analysis with estimated economics and carbon reduction.

Mike Filler is a Regional Sustainable Systems Sales Leader with Trane Technologies, based in Colorado Springs. In this role, he supports Trane account managers and their customers with several subject areas: including decarbonization, thermal storage, heat recovery, heat pumps & refrigerants. Mike has decades of experience with chilled water, thermal storage and heat recovery products & applications. He also has experience with energy modeling of high-performance HVAC systems. Mike volunteers with ASHRAE technical committees and his local chapter Board of Governors. He holds a PE license in Colorado and is ASHRAE Certified as a High-performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) and a Certified Decarbonization Professional (CDP).
