This presentation will discuss regional-scale power system and capacity expansion
modelling, focusing on how generation-side flexibility enhances solar and wind
utilization, lowers costs, and reduces emissions.

Alex will walk through the operational parameters of batteries and various thermal
generation technologies and how those parameters are utilized in Plexos, a
state-of-the-art power system modelling software. Examples and case studies
provided.

Hopefully, attendees walk away with a solid understanding of the operational
characteristics of thermal generation and how long-term planning evaluates
candidate technologies.

Alex Espejo possesses a BS in Chemical Engineering and an MS in Energy Systems from Texas A&M University. He has worked in the energy sector for 6 years, 4 of those with Wartsila, and has presented studies and critiques of power system plans to national grid operators across Latin America and the Caribbean as well as large data providers such as the IEA, IRENA, Bloomberg NEF, and Lazard.
