The presentation will begin with a clear overview of the fundamentals of thermal storage in chilled water plants, a proven strategy that has been widely used for decades. As the electric grid incorporates more intermittent renewable generation, the need for flexible energy-storage solutions is growing rapidly - both at the grid level and behind the meter in buildings. Recent federal incentives have further shifted the economic landscape, introducing provisions that allow tax credits to be directly allocated to non-profit and other tax-exempt organizations. The session will conclude with financial case studies using local electric rate structures to illustrate the real-world economic opportunities created by these emerging policy and market changes.

Mike Filler is a Regional Sustainable Systems Commercialization Manager with Trane Technologies, based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In this role, he supports Trane account managers and their customers with several subject areas: including decarbonization, thermal storage, heat recovery, heat pumps & refrigerants. Mike has decades of experience with chilled water, thermal storage and heat recovery products & applications. He also has experience with energy modeling of high-performance HVAC systems. Mike volunteers with ASHRAE and serves on the board of New Buildings Institute. He holds a PE license in Colorado and is ASHRAE Certified as Decarbonization Professional (CDP) and as a High-performance Building Design Professional (HBDP).
